Good news for elite athletes and weekend warriors alike. A recently published clinical study in the journal, BioMed Research International, described 41 recruited athletes who had sustained exercise related muscular injures. Athletes were divided into two groups, one to receive 10 hyperbaric oxygen therapy sessions, while the other was to receive 10 placebo therapy sessions. Pre-testing was administered, and again at 5 sessions, 10 sessions and 2 weeks post treatment. Results showed the HBOT athlete group had a decrease in serum (blood) inflammatory markers and all reported a reduction in pain, documented at the fifth session. The HBOT group surpassed the placebo group in all parameters leading researchers to state that overall HBOT facilitates the early recovery of exercise-related muscular injury.
